Malta

The capital of Valletta is an ancient fortress city and an aesthetic gem on the coastline. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the smallest capital in Europe, with city walls dating back to the 16th Century. Architectural enthusiasts head to Vittoriosa for the most beautiful, narrow streets in the country.

As with so many Mediterranean destinations, the sea has imposed itself upon the Maltese people; diving is a national pastime, and travelers relish the secluded, picturesque lagoons found all over the archipelago.
